Google vs Instagram: where local customers actually come from

Why Instagram enquiries go quiet, why Google searchers buy, and the order a local business should invest in the two, with the research behind each claim.

In short: People on Instagram are browsing; people searching Google are ready to buy. Fix your Google profile first, reply to leads fast, then add paid social on top.

Most local business owners who run Instagram ads hit the same wall. Enquiries come in, a few people ask the price, and then most of them go quiet. It feels like the leads are bad. Usually they’re just early.

This guide explains why, what the research says about where local buyers actually come from, and the order we recommend for spending your marketing time and money.

The difference is intent

Someone scrolling reels at eleven at night wasn’t planning to buy a sofa, a gold chain or a dental cleaning. The ad caught their eye and they tapped. Curiosity isn’t the same as a buying decision.

Google works the other way round. When a person types jewellery shop near me or best physiotherapist in Swaroop Nagar, the decision to buy has already been made. What’s left is choosing where. Your Google Business Profile is what they see in that moment: your rating, your photos, your hours, a call button and a route to your door.

On Instagram you go looking for customers. On Google, customers come looking for you.

What the numbers say

These figures come from Google’s own research and from independent studies of local search:

  • 76% of people who search for something nearby on their phone visit a business within a day (Google).
  • 28% of local searches end in a purchase (Think with Google).
  • 46% of all Google searches have local intent (Search Engine Roundtable).
  • 97% of people check a business online before visiting it or buying from it (BrightLocal).
  • 42% of people searching with local intent click on the map pack results (Backlinko).

Put together: a large share of searches are local, the people making them act quickly, and nearly everyone checks you online before they commit, wherever they first heard of you. Full citations are on our sources page.

Two tools, built for different jobs

Neither column is “better”. They do different jobs. Paid social creates demand; Google captures demand that already exists.

Where Instagram and Meta ads do win

None of this is an argument against social media. Paid social is the right tool when:

  • you sell across the country or ship online, so your customers aren’t concentrated near one address;
  • you’re launching something people don’t yet know they need, so nobody is searching for it;
  • you’re building a brand that people will later search for by name.

A shop, clinic, showroom, café or coaching institute serving people within a few kilometres usually doesn’t need to create demand. It already exists in the area every day. The job is to be the name people find when they search.

Why the leads that do come in still don’t convert

1. Low intent

The main reason. Most people who tap a social ad weren’t planning to buy anything that day.

2. Reply speed

Speed matters more than most owners think. One industry study found that replying to a lead within five minutes improves qualification rates by 78%. A lead who messages on Instagram at night and hears back the next afternoon has usually moved on. This is exactly what WhatsApp automation fixes.

3. The trust check on Google

Nearly every buyer checks you on Google before they visit or pay, even if they first saw you on Instagram. If what they find is a 3.9 rating, twelve reviews, old photos and wrong opening hours, the Instagram ad did its job and your Google profile lost the sale.

4. Tighter ad economics

Meta’s lead-ad economics are getting tighter; one 2025 benchmark report found 80% of industries saw conversion rates fall year on year. You can still make paid social work, but it needs tracking and a strong landing point.

The order we recommend

Fixing Google fixes both ends. It brings in people who are ready to buy, and it closes the ones social media sends your way. So the order matters:

  1. Google Business Profile first. Correct categories, complete details, real photos, weekly posts, consistent citations and a steady flow of genuine reviews. See our Google Business Profile checklist.
  2. Fast replies. Make sure every call, message and enquiry gets answered quickly.
  3. Website and local SEO. Win the searches people make while they’re still comparing.
  4. Paid social and Google Ads on top. Once the ground floor converts, ads multiply what already works instead of leaking into a weak profile.

How to tell what’s working

Judge each channel on what it brings in, not on likes or impressions:

  • Google Business Profile: calls, direction requests and website clicks in your profile’s performance report, and the search terms people used to find you.
  • Meta ads: cost per lead, and then how many of those leads became customers.
  • Google Ads: cost per call and cost per visit, with conversion tracking set up from day one.
