Guide · Kanpur

More people are coming to Kanpur. They search before they spend.

Domestic visitors to Kanpur Nagar grew 2.4 times from 2023 to 2025. Where visitors spend, which businesses benefit, and why Google Maps is how they choose.

In short: Visitors to Kanpur grew 2.4× from 2023 to 2025. They don’t know the city, so they choose shops, restaurants and hotels from Google Maps.

Kanpur is no longer just an industrial city that people pass through. District tourism figures show visitor numbers more than doubling in two years, helped by the redevelopment of Bithoor, Ghatampur and the city’s temples. Every one of those visitors needs somewhere to eat, stay, shop and get things fixed, in a city they don’t know well.

Where visitors spend their money

The government’s latest Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey, released in September 2026, shows where this money goes:

  • On same-day trips, shopping takes the largest share of spending: 41% for urban travellers and 51% for rural ones. Shopping is also one of the most common reasons for a day trip in the first place.
  • Uttar Pradesh is the most visited state in India, with 15.7% of all visitor trips.
  • Nearly half of overnight trips nationally are for pilgrimage.
  • Medical travel is the most expensive kind of trip, averaging ₹41,649 for urban households.

Which Kanpur businesses benefit

That points to a clear set of winners:

Visitors don’t follow you on Instagram. They open Maps.

A family coming in from Unnao or Fatehpur for a wedding purchase, or a pilgrim stopping after Bithoor, doesn’t follow your Instagram page. They open Google Maps and pick from the first few names with good reviews. With Google Maps handling over 50 million searches a day in India alone, that moment of choice is happening constantly.

For a Kanpur business, being one of those first few names means:

  • the right categories, so you appear for what visitors search;
  • an accurate map pin and hours, so they find you open;
  • recent photos, so they recognise you;
  • a strong rating with replies, so they trust you over the shop next door.
